Mental Health Respite Program
The Commonwealth Respite & Carelink Centre’s Mental Health Respite Program is available to primary carers. This is the person who provides the majority of assistance to a family member, friend or neighbour who has a severe mental illness, psychiatric disability or intellectual disability. There is a particular focus on carers over the age of 65 (over the age of 50 for indigenous carers).
We recognise that caring for a person with a mental illness is different to other caring roles. While a person with a mental illness may be able bodied and have prolonged periods of good health, caring for them may require your constant vigilance and emotional support. This may be just as exhausting as any practical support you may also be providing.
Flexible support options:
The type and duration of support provided in the Mental Health Respite Program will depend on an assessment of your individual caring role and support needs. A range of short term support options may be available, including:
1. In home or community respite: Support in the home or an appropriate alternative setting with trained support workers working with the person you care for, allowing you to take a break from your caring responsibilities.
2. The Going Home program: Practical support to the person you care for in the first week after their discharge from hospital after an acute episode of illness. This program is designed to make the transition back home easier for both you and the person you care for.
3. Social support: Short term support for the person you care for to access activities in the community that may lead to ongoing meaningful engagement in the community to overcome social isolation.
4. Education for carers: Including education and skills training to help you be better informed about mental illness, manage your caring role and look after yourself.
Accessing the service:
Carers can refer themselves to the Mental Health Respite Program by calling FREECALL 1800 052 222. Referrals can also be made by family members or friends, health professionals and service providers with the consent of the carer or client.
